Meet your Energy Advisor: Sam Hill

Solar can be complicated – that’s why EnergySage has a team of Energy Advisors here to help answer any and all of your solar questions. One of our expert advisors is Sam: we sat down with him to learn more about his time at EnergySage and hear some inside tips for people shopping for solar today.

What’s a common solar myth you hear from people looking into solar?

A lot of people believe that solar panels will continue working during a power outage; however, if the grid goes down, most solar panel systems shut off. To keep your home running during a power outage, you need to pair your solar panel system with a battery.

If you could give only one piece of advice to solar shoppers, what would it be?

Solar is a great investment for many homeowners, but it can be a difficult one to navigate on your own. That’s where EnergySage comes in – our advisor team is here to help you sort through your solar options and answer questions about solar equipment, financing, and more, all at no cost to you. Book a call with us!

Why do you enjoy working in the solar industry?

Every time I help get a project to the roof, I’ve saved someone money and helped reduce carbon emissions on the grid… it’s a sense of guilt-free success.

What’s your favorite part about working at EnergySage?

We have a small dedicated team that has really made an impact on the industry. I love being able to contribute to our mission!

Are there any upcoming trends or changes to the solar industry that you’re excited about?

As the total capacity of renewable, intermittent energy in the US power grid expands, so does the need for reliable energy storage. I think the next few years will bring a lot of exciting trends in technology and policies to advance the energy storage industry.

Do you have a favorite solar joke?

Do you believe in global warming? It’d be a lot cooler if you did…

Are there any famous solar advocates/environmentalists that you look up to?

It’s hard to pick just one, but Steven Strong (who played a big role in the country’s adoption of net metering), Lynn Jurich (the CEO of SunRun) and Jigar Shah (the Founder and Former CEO of SunEdison) are a few that stand out in pushing the solar industry forward.

When you’re not busy talking about solar, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy weightlifting, reading, bourbon tasting and skateboarding.
